Join us for the most effective preparation course for your social work licensing exam! At the NASW licensing course, taught by Joanna Bettman Schaefer, PhD, LCSW, and Rich Landward, LCSW, MPA, you will learn test-taking strategies, review content areas, practice answering sample test questions, and gain the experience and confidence you need to tackle the exam.

Social Work Licensing Exam Prep Course

Until February 1st: $125 NASW members / $185 non-members*
After February 1st: $150 NASW members / $210 non-members*

Early-bird discount will be taken off of registration cost at checkout
Price includes 7.5 hours of instruction and a comprehensive study guide worth $115. Books will be available for pickup after January 8th if you wish to study in advance of the course.

Members must sign in to receive discount rate--membership information takes approx. 24 hours to be transferred into our system so please wait one day after joining before attempting to register

Onsite registration will be accompanied by an additional $15 fee

Parking: You may park in any open lot near the venue (unless otherwise indicated). There is no parking enforcement on campus on weekends.

About the Course:
Join us for the most effective preparation course for your social work licensing exam!  At the NASW licensing course, taught by Joanna Bettmann Schaefer, PhD, LCSW, and Rich Landward, LCSW, MPA, you will learn test-taking strategies, review content areas, practice answering sample test questions, and gain the experience and confidence you need to tackle the exam.  A 200-plus page study book complete with practice questions is included in the cost of this affordable and convenient course.

About the Presenters:


Joanna Bettmann Schaefer is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah College of Social Work. She received her B.A. with honors from Dartmouth College in 1993, her MSW from the University of Utah in 1999, and her Ph.D from Smith College School for Social Work in 2005. Dr. Schaefer has received numerous honors, including the 2013 Dean’s Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2011 Psychoanalytic Psychodynamic Research Society Award, a 2006-2007 fellowship with the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the 1993 Lawrence Marx Jr. Award of Dartmouth College.

She has worked as a staff, therapist, director, and researcher at wilderness therapy and residential treatment settings for troubled youth since 1994. She has also worked as a clinical social worker in several community mental health agencies, the University of Utah Counseling Center, and private practice. She is trained in disaster response and served as a social worker for the American Red Cross response to Hurricane Katrina in Utah and Mississippi.

Dr. Schaefer writes and researches on a range of topics, including adolescent attachment, wilderness therapy, residential treatment, and treatment outcomes. She has published articles in many academic journals and has presented her research nationally and internationally at professional conferences over the last 20 years. 

  Rich Landward LCSW, MPA is currently an assistant professor/lecturer in the College of Social Work at the University of Utah.  He specializes in using Mind Body Bridging and Motivational Interviewing to treat Post Traumatic Stress, anxiety, and substance use in children, adolescents, and adults.  Rich received master’s degrees in social work and public administration from the University of Utah. Prior to teaching full time, Rich worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center treating chronically mentally ill homeless veterans.  He has also worked in highly impacted schools in Midvale, Utah, implementing a comprehensive community schools model and school-based mental health programs to support students and families impacted by poverty and mental illness.

Refund Policy:

You must call AND send written (email) cancellation to receive a refund as follows: 45 days prior to event: 80%; 30 days prior to event: 50%; less than 30 days prior: no refund, but you will be provided with the course study guide (you must initiate arrangements for pick up). Refunds will be issued within 30 business days.
Registering for this class  means that you understand and agree to this refund policy.

Class Cancellation:
Natural disasters, illness or other unforeseen events may result in cancellation of the workshop. NASW has never had to cancel a workshop. However, if a cancellation should occur, NASW will refund the cost of the registration fee within 30 business days. NASW shall be held harmless for any other fees.

Note on Accommodations:

If you require accommodations to permit your attendance or participation, please provide a written request along with a completed registration form and conference payment at least 30 days prior to the registration deadline for the workshop or conference. Requests received after this deadline may not be able to be processed or fulfilled in time for the activity
