The DSM-5: An Overview of Changes & Challenges

Upcoming changes to the DSM will require social workers and other mental health professionals to retool their knowledge of current diagnostic categories and criteria.

This course will provide an overview of these changes as well as a discussion of why changes in specific diagnostic and mental health categories are considered controversial.

Jan Terpstra, MD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Utah School of Medicine.  His clinical work specializes in the inpatient care of persons with serious and persistent mental illness.  Dr. Terpstra’s academic interests include teaching and supervising medical students and resident physicians, as well as medical student mental health.  He is the director of the School of Medicine’s Medical Student Wellness Program.
